US-China Third Space: Story Circle workshop for high school teachers

February 27 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Registration Link:  The Zoom information for joining the event will be sent out after registering.

This workshop will introduce high school Chinese language teachers, administrators and other teachers at their schools to UNESCO Story Circles. Story circles offer an opportunity for diverse American and Chinese students to engage within a virtual “safe space,” in turn allowing students to (1) learn about one another’s cultures and communities, (2) practice foreign language skills, and (3) cultivate intercultural competencies. Over the past year, this UNESCO methodology was piloted with hundreds of university students from the US and China.

Buffalo native Dr. Frank M. Dolce (杜启天博士), a Chinese foreign language educator and trained facilitator in this methodology, will lead the workshop and help all of us understand how this methodology can support student learning. Dr. Dolce has adapted the story circle method specifically for Chinese and American students to engage with each other in an initiative called US-China Third Space. UBCI is  collaborating with St. Cloud State University (with which UB shares a partner in Beijing, Capital Normal University) to bring this valuable program to schools in Minnesota and Western New York.

Phase One: Feb. 27, 1:00-2:30 PM EST, via Zoom

A Chinese language teacher and one other representative (e.g., an administrator, department head, mentor teacher) from each school that offers Mandarin are invited to participate in the workshop. Other teachers and administrators who want to learn more about UNESCO story circles are welcome to participate. The more diverse the participants, the more it will simulate the experience story circles can bring to students learning Chinese (or other languages).

Phase Two: To be scheduled soon for spring 2021

High school students in Western NY and Minnesota who are learning Chinese will be able to join story circles. These will be hosted after school virtually.

Phase Three: Story Circles throughout the summer of 2021 and 2021-2022 academic year.

We hope story circles will provide an opportunity for Chinese language learners to get connected with peers in China, using Mandarin as they are able, to share stories, learn about each other’s culture, develop their interactional/intercultural competencies, and further cultivate curiosity towards China!
