Center for Language Education and Culture Announces Confucius Institute Scholarships

 

The Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) announces the next round of applications for the Confucius Institute scholarship program. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, Chinese language departments of foreign universities, and similar educational organizations (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study international Chinese language education or related majors in Chinese universities and colleges (“host institutions”).

In recent years, the first two scholarship programs–for one academic year and one-semester–have been most popular with University at Buffalo students, recent graduates, and others affiliated with the UB Confucius Institute.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be:

  1. non-Chinese citizen
  2. Physically and mentally prepared for overseas study, with strong academic performance and positive involvement in the community
  3. Aspiring to careers as teachers or international promotion of/involvement with Chinese language
  4. Between the ages of 16-35 on September 1, 2021. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers must not be more than 45 years old, and undergraduate students must not be more than 25 years old.

SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study 
The program commences in September 2021, and provides a scholarship for a maximum of eleven months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

  1. TCSOL
    Applicants must have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
  2. Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, etc.
    Applicants must have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
  3. Chinese Language Study
    Applicants must have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

Scholarship for One-Semester Study
The program commences either in September 2021 or March 2022, and provides a scholarship of a maximum of five months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

  1. TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, etc.
    Applicants must have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
  2. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taiji Culture
    An HSK test score is required. Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

Scholarship for Four-Week Study
The program commences either in July or December 2021, and provides a four-week scholarship. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

Chinese Study, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taiji Culture, Chinese Language plus Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family, Special Four-week Program for Confucius Institutes
An HSK test score is required. The program should be organized by a recommending institution with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan must be made in consultation with host institutions.   

Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2021 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants must hold a high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2021 and provides a scholarship for a maximum of two academic years. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who can provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China.

Scholarship for Doctor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (DTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2021 and provides a scholarship for a maximum four academic years.  Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Linguistics, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages or education-related majors. Applicants must have a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 6), 60 on the HSKK test (Advanced Level) and more than 2 years’ work experience in Chinese language teaching and related fields. Priority will be given to applicants who can provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online registration will be available from March 1, 2021 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn). Log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions; upload application materials online; and track the application progress, comments and results. Scholarship holders need to confirm with the host institutions the procedures for studying in China, print out the scholarship certificate online, and register at host institutions on the designated date as per the letter of admission.

The application deadlines (Beijing Time) are:

a)  For programs commencing in July, student applications must be submitted by April 15; recommending institutions and host institutions must complete review before April 25.

b) For programs commencing in September, student applications must be submitted by May 15; recommending institutions and host institutions must complete review before May 25.

c) For programs commencing in December, student applications must be submitted by September 15; recommending institutions and host institutions must complete review before September 25.

d) For programs commencing in March 2022, student application must be submitted by November 15; recommending institutions and host institutions must complete review before November 25.

CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be made based on HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in consideration of country distribution as well as other factors. The results will be published about three months before school starts.

RECOMMENDING INSTITUTIONS AND HOST INSTITUTIONS

Recommending institutions and host institutions will provide guidance, recommendations, and support with enrollment.

a) Please contact host institutions for curriculum and course listings.

b) Applicants should be familiar with the specific criteria and deadlines for registration, and submit necessary documents according to specific requirements.

c) Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Appraisal Procedures of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.

d) Those who fail to register on time, fail to pass the health assessment, drop out midway and/or are suspended from school will be lose their scholarship.
