Huili Gong, Co-chair

Gong Huili is Executive President of Capital Normal University (CNU) and is in charge of a wide range of administrative tasks for CNU, two main areas being international cooperation and academic development and research. He is also a professor and doctoral candidate supervisor at the College of Resource Environment and Tourism, CNU. Executive President Gong is the chief university officer responsible for all international affairs at CNU, which include formulating international strategies and policies for CNU, being present on various important international occasions, meeting with international delegations, signing cooperative agreements and serving on the boards of Confucius Institutes abroad partnered with CNU.
Professor Gong holds positions in numerous academic committees and journal presses. He is Director of the Sub-center for Environment Ecological Process, National Research Center for Urban Environment Pollution Control Engineering Technology of the People’s Republic of China (PRC); member, Geological Information Systems (GIS) experts group, Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC; member, Scientific Experts Council, National Disaster Reduction Committee of the PRC; Senior Adviser, Center of Environment Engineering, Ministry of Construction of the PRC; member, Teaching Guidance Committee for Geographical Science, Ministry of Education of the PRC; member, Chinese International Education of Academic Degree Committee, State Council of the PRC; Special Researcher, National Disaster Reduction Center, Ministry of Civil Affairs of the PRC; Expert, Editorial Committee of Water Research (Published by Elsevier Science, Ltd.) in the Asia and Pacific region; Associate Editor in Chief of Journal of Natural Disaster; member of the editorial committees of core journals such as Geotechnical Investigation & Surveying, Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, Journal of Mountain Science, Geography and Geo-information Science; part-time Professor, Chinese Academy of Science and Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Science; member, Expert Committee of the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping; member, Academic Committee, Institute of Digital China, Peking University; member, Academic Committee, Key Laboratory of 3S Engineering, Beijing Municipality (Peking University).
Gong’s principal research interest is in geological environmental and groundwater management and in environmental remote sensing and geological disasters. He is in charge of a dozen national-level research projects and heads two key laboratories at national and municipal levels. He has published over 180 papers and books in his research area, both in China and abroad. For his notable achievement in and contribution to research and teaching, Professor Gong won China’s “National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology” in 2002, and a science honors prize for the “Award of 100 In Promoting Chinese Development” in 2006. He holds the titles “Excellent Professor of Ministry of Education” of the PRC, “Beijing Municipality Trans-century Talent,” and “Beijing Municipality Outstanding and Creative Talent.” In recent years, he has won first, second, and third prizes for progress in science and technology (awarded by the provincial governments and national ministry), once, four times, and twice, respectively. In 2008, he was appointed Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering and was awarded the jubilee medal of the International Academy of Engineering (IAE). In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from Moscow State University of Psychology and Education.
