Yangqin: An Introduction

April 18, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

Concert/Lecture/Demonstration by Helen Yee, Music of China
Baird Recital Hall
Baird Hall, 2nd floor, UB North Campus

Join Helen Yee for a lecture demonstration concert of the yangqin, the Chinese hammer dulcimer. An ancient instrument that originated in the Middle East and traveled to southern China in the 18th century, the yangqin is a central instrument in many Chinese instrumental ensembles today. Helen Yee, an accomplished violinist and composer, began learning yangqin at age ten while growing up near New York City. She has played with the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York and Music from China, an ensemble performing traditional and new music on traditional Chinese instruments. Ms. Yee will introduce the yangqin, speak about traditional Chinese music and its various styles, and tell about her own experience learning the instrument. The session will conclude with a performance of “Moon Reflected on Erquan”, a piece she arranged for UB viola instructor Leanne Darling, originally for yangqin and erhu.

Co-sponsored by the UB Confucius Institute and Department of Music.
